Career Aspect of a Music Degree in Malaysia Part 1

Every year thousands of young kids graduating from universities all over Malaysia with all kinds of degree. I am not an exceptional. I graduated from a public university doing a performing arts degree majoring in violin. When you first heard of this degree, i'm sure you guys may ask-what do you guys study? do you play instruments throughout your study? what you going to do when you graduate? It's pretty common for me to receive this kinds of questions and i'm here to answer all this.

A performing arts degree is of course train to perform in front of audience and yes, we play instruments throughout our studies. Besides performing, we also do learn about theories and principles. When you graduated with this degree, to be honest you can only teach the instruments which what mainly all my coursemate now doing or performing which is not so possible or the third career choice which i choose-to get into another field. If you have ever fantacize about performing under the spotlight after graduating, i am here to tell you please don't dream. The chances are very slim. If you wish to teach in music centres, yes you can but you are not entitiled to get any EPF or benefits. This means you have to prepare to cover all your expenses on your own with no health benefits and career stability. If people ask you to leave, you have to go because it's not bounded by any contracts. You don't have the chance to argue. But some people may say, how about having a permanent full time job in a music centre or RTM or Istana Budaya (IB) or DBKL? For a full time position in a music centre, there's no career growth, if you love music so much and don't mind, please go ahead. If you want yearly increment in salary like some out your friends doing other courses, please step out from this. For RTM and IB or DBKL, i would say it's very difficult, those positions don't require you to obtain a degree, a SPM cert will do. A music degree doesn't stand you out in for those positions. If you insisted to get a position, you need to have connections if not don't dream even you had a performing arts degree from University of Malaya.

If you still want to get a performing arts degree after reading, congratulations! You may go ahead and chase after your dream. If you hesitate after reading, congratulations too! You finally woke up.
